[ Cats ] Open Question : Rescue cat bites when she’s stroked?

We’ve taken in a 4 year old female rescue cat, who is quite mild-mannered. She came into the cat shelter as her owners had children, one of which, a toddler, pulled her about, and as she was a housecat, had nowhere to escape to. She never lashed out at the child or any other family member. When I stroke her near her hips, she goes to bite me. Logic suggests that this is because she’s not used to us yet, and still has the ‘toddler fear’. Does anyone else believe this to be so, and what is the best way to get her out of this habit? I’m sure she can be a very loving cat!
